Them
There are often two facets of home life that go hand in hand. The need to renovate a home and the desire to go
"green". While these two are not always synonymous there is a growing trend in the world today to leave less of a
carbon foot print and lower their cost of living. One of the easiest ways to lower energy costs is to utilize solar
roof shingles. These items are thin versions of the traditional solar panels that can be directly attached to the
roofing paper in some instances while other versions require special mounting. Either way they allow for a more
aesthetic appearance that traditional solar panels and blend well with any normal asphalt shingles on the roof of a
house.
Solar roof shingles are designed to provide electrical power to a home while being perfectly unobtrusive. They
are designed to look very similar to standard asphalt shingles but have the added benefit of actively providing
electrical power for the home. These types of shingle are photovoltaic cells capable of capturing and transforming
sunlight into clean usable DC electrical power. The typical solar shingle will be twelve inches wide and around
eighty-six inches long. Once applied the standard model will have five inches of exposed area.

The most typical usage of these type of energy providing shingles is as a back-up for the power grid. This
requires the usage of batteries in the home and will often require extra hardware related expenses. However, this
is still the most inexpensive route. Completely renovating a home in order power it entirely by solar energy will
require a great deal more money and back-up battery generation is still highly suggested in case of severe or
storms or badly overcast skies. Thick snow piled on the shingles could cause a power outage without these back-up
batteries, for instance.

To utilize the electrical power from solar roof shingles there must be an inverter installed in the home. This
device inverts the power from the DC electricity generated by the shingles into AC electrical current usable by
modern homes. Without this inversion technology most sensitive electronics would readily be destroy by the
difference in alternating and direct current.
While there can be a few problems for people that wish to convert to solar power the end result is that the
shingles can be installed in one day and the savings on the electric bill can last an entire life time.
