Architectural Roof Shingles
Architectural roof shingles are a newer type of shingle that have an architectural look to them. They were
introduced in the 1970's and are one of the most popular roof products today. These shingles give a 3-D look to the
roof. This is because unlike flat 3 tab shingles, architectural shingles are a layered asphalt product.
Architectural roofing shingles tend to have a longer lifespan. This is because they are composed of more heavier
duty asphalt and usually weigh more than a 3-tab shingle. This is one of the main reasons that made these shingles
so popular. A low-grade architectural shingle will usually be warranted for at least 25 years. Higher grade
architecturals can be warranted as long as 50 years. However, most will fall in the 30-40 year range. This is a
major difference compared to conventional 3-tab shingles. 3-tabs will generally be warranted for 20-30 years.

Installation of architectural roofing shingles is another reason they became so popular. Since these shingles
have no uniform pattern, any piece of the shingle can sit anywhere on the roof. For roofers, its a cut and fit
operation. There are no tabs to line up. This creates less waste and, ultimately, less cost to the homeowner.
Additionally, since architectural shingles are built more durable, they have a thicker nailing strip. This makes it
difficult for the do it yourself roofer to puncture the shingle.
Architectural roofing shingles may be used anywhere a 3-tab shingle would. 3-tab shingles are generally used on
applications where the slope of the roof is more than 3" per 12" of run. Architectural shingles are acceptable to
use where the slope of the roof is at least 2" per 12" of run. Specialized flat roof products must be used anywhere
the slope is less than 2/12.
Architectural roofing shingles have a few other benefits as well. These shingles are manufactured to be
fire-proof and algae-resistant. Also, they are built to withstand strong winds and extreme temperatures.
Architecturals are also much easier to repair, however, rarely need it due to the durability.
While 3-tab shingles are still the most economical way to re-roof your home, architectural shingles are not far
off. If one was to buy a 3-tab shingle with a 20 year warranty versus a architectural with a 25 year warranty the
cost may differ $5.00 per bundle. For an average 15 square roof, it would cost $225.00 additional. Well worth it
for an architectural shingle. Overall, architectural shingles are the most popular because they are a better
shingle.
